Papers consist of letters, letter books, legal documents, and miscellaneous printed matter. Bulk of the collection consists of letter books kept by Harris during his residence in Japan as United States Consul General as well as government account books, passports, and letters of credence. Also included are clippings about Harris and the Townsend Harris Monument in Shimoda, Japan. Josiah Tattnall (1795-1871) was the son of Governor Josiah Tattnall and Harriet Fenwick Tattnall. At the age of 10, he was sent to London for his education, where he remained until he was sixteen. Upon his return, he was appointed midshipman in the U.S. Navy. He had attained the rank of Commander when he resigned in 1861 to return to Georgia. John Bowring was an English statesman and author, renowned as a polyglot. Born in Exeter and raised as a Unitarian, he began working at the age of thirteen, and actively sought to learn languages from travellers. Rutherford Alcock was born in 1809. Following his father into the medical profession, he became a surgeon in the Marine Brigade in Portugal in 1833, later serving with the Spanish Legion until 1837.
